MCCONNELL AIR FORCE BASE, Kan. --
Airman 1st Class David Stevens II, 177th Information Aggressor Squadron, 184th Wing, Wichita, received the Airman’s Medal at a ceremony that was presented by Maj. Gen. David Weishaar, Kansas Adjutant General, Aug. 7, 2021.
The Airman’s Medal is awarded when an individual distinguished himself or herself by a heroic act, usually at the voluntary risk of his or her life but not involving actual combat.
On July 28, 2020, Stevens witnessed a car accident at a busy intersection in Wichita. The driver of an SUV experienced a medical emergency, causing their vehicle to be wedged under a city bus with the accelerator pinned down.
Stevens immediately jumped into action, leaving his vehicle and running to the scene to provide aid. He struck the passenger window several times to break through, then reached in and turned off the vehicle.

“That took some courage,” said Weishaar. “I hope to think that I would have that same courage to do what he did.”
Stevens’ actions prevented a severe accident that could have easily endangered the safety of bystanders. Stevens’ quick actions allowed Emergency Medical Services to attend to the driver and the injuries Stevens received during the rescue.
By putting his own life at risk, Stevens displayed the heroism which earned him the Airman’s Medal.
“This courageous act of service before self is exactly what we want to have within all of us in situations such as this,” said Weishaar. “Thank you very much for what you did, thank you for being a member of this community and thank you for making the community a better place.”
