COLONEL JOSEPH J. DEEDS

 

Col. Joe Deeds is the commander, 184th Wing, McConnell Air Force Base, Kansas. He is responsible for preparing the largest multi-domain wing in the Air National Guard in support of worldwide joint and coalition operations. The wing employs more than 1,300 Airmen, who conduct air battle management, air to ground special warfare, cyber protection, cyber vulnerability assessments, network security, and strategic and tactical intelligence. In addition, the wing fields a full complement of medical operations and mission support functions including civil engineering, contracting, force support, installation communication, logistics, and security forces. Col. Deeds also provides the governor of Kansas with over 1,300 Guardsmen trained and ready to provide domestic incident response in support of any crisis citizens of Kansas may face at their greatest time of need.

Col. Deeds enlisted in the Kansas Air National Guard in May 2001 as an aircraft armament specialist. Shortly after becoming a bomb loader on the B-1, he cross trained to become an inflight refueling specialist on the KC-135R. In November 2007, Col. Deeds commissioned from the Academy of Military Science, McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base, Tennessee, and subsequently graduated from Intelligence Officer School, Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas. He is an Air Force Weapons School graduate and has deployed as the DCGS liaison officer, Combined Air Operations Center, Al Udied Air Base, Qatar. Col. Deeds has also served as the wing weapons officer, 480th Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Wing, Langley Air Force Base, Virginia, and as a military assistant to the director for Defense Intelligence, Warfighter Support, Pentagon, Washington D.C. Col. Deeds has served in various squadron commands, state headquarters staff positions, Mission Support Group commander, and deputy wing commander prior to taking command of the 184th Wing.
